Rapidly increasing E-waste

People of every social class need access to cheap and sustainable electronic equipment even though they project a big problem for our future. In recent years, Due to constant innovation and up gradation in technology, the amount of discarded electronic items has increased exponentially. Even with strict rules to dispose of e-waste, the consumer is left to their own devices to take care of it, unlike other forms. Due to minimal education on the subject, the discarded waste never reaches the proper disposal endpoint, accumulating an enormous amount of e-waste which is never suitably recycled, disposed or discarded.
Every year, India discards 62 million metric tonnes of e-waste, which rises to 2.01 Billion metric tonnes globally. Out of this amount, 53.6 million metric tonnes is e-waste which has increased at an alarming rate of 21% in the last five years, making it the world’s highest growing Domestic Waste System. India is the third-largest producer of e-waste after China and The United Stated at the first and second positions.
This E-waste infuses a tremendous risk to the public and the environment. The presence of heavy
metals and highly toxic substances such as mercury, lead, beryllium, and cadmium pose a
significant threat to the environment even in minute quantities. Precious metals such as gold and platinum are lost in the waste, thus leading to massive material loss that could have been recovered and utilized. In 2019, we lost 10 billion USD dollars worth of precious metals in e-waste, out of which we could only recover 17%.
Apart from leading to direct health concerns, e-waste also leads to an alarming increase in global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution, and waste handling problems.
